A few decades ago, cow-chip contests were popular. This year at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is reviving the fun activity by offering a new manure toss game with DATCP staff so fairgoers can learn more about how farmers apply nutrients to farm fields to grow crops and protect groundwater.
The game is just one of many hands-on activities designed to teach fairgoers about agriculture while having fun. The activities can be found in the Farm and Family Building at the fair, July 31-Aug. 10.
Also new this year, the building will include a home office area. Visitors can play a game to learn basic consumer protection tips and how to protect their identity at home and over the phone. They can also pick up helpful information to share with friends and family.
Another area features ways to learn more about the foods found in the grocery store and how they go from the farm fork to the dinner fork. Children can color a small picture and make a button to wear and take home.
Back again is the popular Veggie 500 racing board with state FFA officers designing and building the race cars using commonly grown Wisconsin vegetables. The FFA members lead five races each hour, and children will be able to cheer on their favorite vegetable car and receive a prize ribbon for participating.
The backyard area will offer information about animal health and how to care for pets.
Once again the WDATCP area will feature two trivia wheels that entice visitors to spin the wheel and learn about Wisconsin agriculture and food. One will include questions about Wisconsin agriculture and the fact that Wisconsin is home to nearly 70,000 farms. The other wheel will focus on food safety tips for the kitchen. Players will take home a handy card to help them remember proper cooking temperatures and how long they can safely store foods.
The 67th Alice in Dairyland, Zoey Brooks, will welcome visitors to the Farm and Family Building at select times each day.
Visitors will be able to keep cool at the fair by picking up a colorful hand fan. Limited quantities are available.
